Google usually releases new Pixel devices every year, but in 2023. There could be some important changes to their product lineup. It will hold its I/O conference soon, where we might get a sneak peek at their new products.
Google has a new chatbot called Bard, which they opened up to the public in March. We might hear more about Bard and Google’s other artificial intelligence plans during the I/O conference in May.
Big tech companies like Samsung, Motorola, and Microsoft are already thinking about what’s next for smartphones and their apps. They’re introducing new concept devices with slidable and rollable screens. Microsoft has a new version of Bing that uses AI to provide better answers. This means Google has some strong competition in the search arena it has dominated for years.
We expect Google to release new products this year based on rumors, reports, and their typical product launch schedule.
Pixel 7A
Google may release a cheaper version of its Pixel 7 phone called the Pixel 7A in the spring or summer. Last year, Google introduced the Pixel 6A at a conference and started selling it in July. This year, if Google announces the Pixel 7A at its annual developer conference, we could learn about it in just a few weeks.
We do not know for sure what the Pixel 7A will have until Google announces it, but some leaks and reports give us clues. According to developer Kuba Wojciechowski, who found possible details about the Pixel 7A in the Android codebase, the phone may have a screen with a higher refresh rate of 90Hz and wireless charging.
This is important because these features were not available in the Pixel 6A. By adding them to the Pixel 7A, Google would make its budget-friendly phone more similar to its expensive phones.
A Vietnamese website called Zing News also leaked that the Pixel 7A may have a 6.1-inch screen like the 6A and a design similar to the Pixel 7.
If the Pixel 7A is like the Pixel 6A, it will have the same Tensor G2 processor as the Pixel 7 but a slightly worse camera.
Pixel Fold
Google has not yet made a foldable phone or talked about making one, unlike other big phone manufacturers. But it seems that Google might release a foldable Pixel phone in June, according to reports from 9to5Google and WinFuture. The design of the phone could be wider and shorter compared to Samsung’s foldable phones. The Pixel Fold may also have a camera with main, ultrawide, and telephoto lenses.
Google is known for offering lower-priced phones than Apple and Samsung, so if they release a foldable phone, it is hoped that it will be reasonably priced. Currently, Samsung is the leader in the foldable phone market with 62% of the market share in the first half of 2022. It will be interesting to see if Google can compete with them.
Although sales of foldable phones are increasing, they still make up a small percentage of the total smartphone market. In 2023, it is expected that global shipments of foldable phones will increase by 52%, reaching 22.7 million units. However, when you consider that 304 million smartphones were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2022, 22.7 million is still a small number.
Pixel 8 and 8 Pro
Google usually introduces its new top-of-the-line Pixel smartphones in the autumn. It’s anticipated that they will continue to do so in 2023. We don’t know what features the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will have until Google announces them.
Recently, Google has been focused on improving the cameras of their Pixel phones. For example, the Pixel 7 phones received better zooming abilities. The Pixel 7 Pro got a new mode for macro photography. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro were the first Pixel phones to run on Google’s Tensor chips. Which brought new features such as Magic Eraser, Face Unblur, and Real Tone. It’s possible that Google will continue to enhance the cameras on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. Both phones will also have a new Tensor processor.
There have been a few reports about the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, but not much has been leaked so far. According to WinFuture, the new phones will run on Android 14 and have 12GB of RAM. Additionally, well-known gadget leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer has partnered with blogs MySmartPrice and SmartPrix to publish renderings of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.
Android 14
Android 14 is in a testing mode for developers, and it will be released for consumers in the autumn. Google adds new features to Android and Pixel devices during the year, but its annual updates usually bring big improvements to the whole platform.
For example, Android 13 had more color options, end-to-end encryption for group chats in Messages, and better privacy features. You can now give apps access to just a few photos instead of all of them.
Based on what we know about Android 14 so far, it seems like Google will focus on making improvements to power efficiency, privacy, and accessibility. We should learn more at Google’s I/O developer conference in May.
Pixel Tablet
Google is making a new tablet called the Pixel Tablet. It will have a special charging dock with a speaker that can turn it into a Nest Hub when it’s docked. We don’t know much about the tablet yet. but Google talked about it a little bit at an event in October. They said it will have a special coating that makes it look like porcelain. It will run on a processor called Tensor G2 that’s also used in the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. Google plans to release the tablet in 2023, but they haven’t given any more details about when or how. We might learn more about it at a Google event in the summer or fall.
Pixel Watch 2
Google has not yet talked about their plans for future Pixel Watches, and there have not been many rumors about what might be next for Google’s smartwatch. However, since Google usually releases new Pixel phones every year, it is possible that they may do the same with the Pixel Watch.
Based on what we know about the current Pixel Watch, it is likely that the new version will have a similar round design. We may also see the latest version of Wear OS, which will be announced at Google I/O, included in the new watch. Additionally, we may see improvements to battery life and new features for tracking health and fitness, such as automatic workout detection.
More AI in Google Search and elsewhere
In 2023, generative AI technology like ChatGPT is being used a lot, including in Google’s products. Google has introduced an AI-powered chatbot called Bard for searching, and they’re also working on new AI features for Gmail and Google Docs to help with writing and editing emails.
At the upcoming Google I/O conference, we expect AI to be a big topic because Google wants to keep up with its competitors like Microsoft. According to The New York Times, Google was concerned after ChatGPT was released and might use the conference to show off its own AI capabilities.
Google has talked about AI at past I/O conferences, including updates to automation and improvements to Search. This year, they’ll likely focus on AI and Search to compete with Microsoft’s Bing.
