Honeybee Robotics : About Success Growth and Future

Honeybee Robotics, Ltd. is a company that works in the Other General Purpose Machinery Manufacturing industry and is based in Brooklyn, New York. Honeybee Robotics, Ltd. employs 228 people across all of its sites and earns $43.76 million in revenue (USD). (The sales number is simulated. Honeybee Robotics, Ltd. is part of a business family of 33 firms.

Honeybee Robotics has had a number of commercialization achievements as a result of the federal SBIR programme. We will present a number of case studies on successful technology development and infusion, including the 2003 Mars Exploration Rover Rock Abrasion Tool (RAT), the 2007 NASA Mars Phoenix Lander Icy Soil Acquisition Deice (ISAD), the 2011 Mars Science Laboratory Rover Sample manipulation System (SMS), and excavation systems for NASA Lunar Surface Systems and the Department of Defense.

Honeybee Robotics is devoted to the development of technology and solutions for next-generation sophisticated robotic and spacecraft systems that must function in more dynamic, unstructured, and frequently hostile settings.

NASA, the US Department of Defense, academia, and business have all completed projects for the company. Space and planetary exploration, satellites, green manufacturing, autonomous mining, robotic surgery, and other goods are among the technologies and products offered by Honeybee Robotics.

Honeybee Robotics of Altadena, California, and mPower Technology of Albuquerque, New Mexico, have joined forces and will be granted one of these NASA development contracts. mPower is a market leader in the design and manufacture of Dragon SCALES TM space-qualified photovoltaics that are lightweight, flexible, and durable.

Honeybee Robots is a global pioneer in robotics for harsh planetary conditions. These two institutions create a formidable partnership that will give a novel and ground-breaking answer to the problems of providing portable electricity on the lunar surface.

The Lunar Array Mast and Power System (LAMPS) design will make use of some of the lightest solar panels ever created. Using a patented, innovative deployable boom, LAMPS stretches these solar panels to a height of two storeys and unfolds another two-and-a-half stories of panel material.

“Honeybee has spent decades designing, testing, and flying mechanisms for planetary surfaces,” said Kris Zacny, VP of Honeybee’s Exploration Systems division in Altadena, Calif. “Our expertise in subsurface drilling is now going to be flipped on its head to ‘dig’ up, rather than down. We are thankful to NASA for being selected and very excited by the possibility of combining our expertise, with that of mPower, to make LAMPS a reality.”

Honeybee has performed over 300 projects for NASA, the United States Department of Defense, academia, business, and artists since 1983.

Steve Gorevan and Chris Chapman are the founders of Honeybee.

Honeybee was created in 1983 as a systems integrator utilising off-the-shelf robots by Steve Gorevan and Chris Chapman (shown left). Our original offices were above a piano shop on New York City’s Lower East Side.

Mars Rover CURIOSITY : Honeybee Robotics

For businesses such as IBM, Allied Signal, The Salk Institute, Merck, 3M, and Con Edison, our early work comprised robotic arms, robot end-effectors, and smart task-oriented electromechanical systems. We soon established a reputation for our creative problem solving and unique design talents.

In 1986, Honeybee earned its first NASA contract. Since then, we have steadily increased our ability to design and construct innovative, dependable space technologies. Because of our ongoing funding for planetary science, we have provided NASA with essential technology for the previous three Mars missions.

Honeybee is now working on a variety of sophisticated mechanisms and robotic technologies for aerospace, planetary exploration, medical devices, energy, mining, infrastructure, and other applications.

In addition to a diverse selection of products for the space community, Honeybee provides our partners with a comprehensive set of engineering, consulting, manufacturing, and testing services. Honeybee has the knowledge and experience to carry projects all the way through the product development cycle, from early-stage feasibility studies through designing and prototyping hardware and control systems, to manufacturing and validation.
